It took a week of intense psychological warfare with a volcano before I was able to change my Facebook status to 'surfing in paradise until further notice'. So, needless to say, I was extremely thankful to be in Bali, and everywhere I looked there seemed to be more and more to be thankful for; turquoise seas, perfect machine like waves that were unexpectedly 'me sized', fallen frangipani all around to wear in my hair, and so much colour that I couldn't decide whether to surf or take photographs.

Wherever we went we seemed to trip over small colourful offerings made by the Balinese to their Hindu gods. Each is a small work of art constructed with enormous care and placed everywhere from beaches, to homes, to the middle of the road. I noticed my first offering at Denpasar airport as I was handing over my $25 visa fee - a small palm leaf tray filled with rice, flowers, a ritz biscuit, a cigarette and, of course, a smoking incense stick. All around you in Bali are the petals and remains of these once perfect creations, yet still the same care and attention is given to preparing new ones over and over again throughout the day. I like this time dedicated everyday to create something beautiful to give thanks and appreciate what you have .. it's a reminder to us all to slow down and value the small things.

immesouane reminds me a bit of the Pass in Byron Bay .. a constant thoroughfare of surfers heading out at the point (in this case by the harbour wall), catching a gloriously long ride or two and then walking back around.. At immesouane, depending on the tide and how good a wave you get, this can also involve a bit of a clamber along a rocky path in the cliff..

today I watched a woman drop a crisp packet in the street .. it was an act of such extreme laziness that she did not even take the effort to drop it with conviction .. she just stopped holding it .. and it fell to the floor brushing and bouncing against her legs as it went .. she did not break stride

someone on my plane home told me that the acoustics of the sea are different in the bay at immesouane as the sound of the waves bounces back from the cliff walls. I will listen for that difference next time..

After a night in Stone town at the gorgeous yet bargainsome Coffee House I headed to Kendwa. 3 days alone on a paradise beach with only 4 cameras for company.

Return to the Magical Spice Island

Lucky me, in October I was sent to Dar es Salaam for a workshop. It would have been foolish not to take a quick hop over to the magical spice island so I quickly found myself on a precision air flight to Stonetown. Flight is an overstatement.. the air hostess starts the safety briefing as we taxi down the runway and as soon as she has finished telling us where the emergency exits are, we are preparing our seats for landing.

Stonetown is almost too much for the senses so I turned my desire to photograph everything off for a bit and headed to the town beach for sunset. Orange topped boats glowing in the dipping sun, a beach swarming with noise, football games, kids playing in the sea .. ok so I still took a couple of shots!
